Works from Serbia
1996 - 2017

This is the selection of paintings, drawings, and installations that were created between 2005 and 2017. During this period, I focused on specific materials, such as ink on paper and acrylic paint. Due to the lack of a studio, I primarily worked on smaller formats, with few exceptions. One of the main themes I explored was wild plants, like weeds and other unwanted flora, which, for me, symbolized resilience and the will to survive. As a queer person, I often saw these plants as metaphors for queer identity. I was also deeply engaged in addressing the phenomena of historical discontinuity, war conflicts, and the erasure of historical facts, which were often replaced with misleading narratives that distorted our understanding of real events. Through this body of work, art became my way of processing these difficult histories, turning creation into a form of personal and collective healing.

Almost immediately after I started my education at the very traditional Belgrade University of Fine Arts, I was exposed to conceptual art. Working daily within a rigid school program, I began to develop new works involving performance, photography, and video art. 'The Bath Culture' is my second solo exhibition and my first attempt to create an ambient installation, designing a specific experience within the gallery.

Dolls

​series of drawings

I have been making art for as long as I can remember, but I chose to showcase here a series of drawings from my teenage years (14 to 17 years old) titled 'Dolls.' These drawings were created during a period when multiple wars were raging in the ex-Yugoslavia region, with the NATO bombing of Serbia as a culminating moment. For me, 'Dolls' represent the daily barrage of crazy news and the government's brainwashing of people. At the time, Serbia was under embargo and our mobility was extremely limited, so I suppose that's why all of these heads are stuck in one place.

These were also years when I was deeply depressed and suicidal, questioning everything around me. At the same time, my parents had a very unhappy relationship, and I just wanted to run away from my hometown. Fortunately, I was able to enter the University of Fine Arts a year before I was supposed to finish high school, so I moved to Belgrade and started a new chapter in my life.

During my teenage years, I created probably more than 100 drawings in this series, including self-portraits, but in moments of feeling very low, I would burn them. Very few of these drawings survived, so I cherish them now as a document of my own history.
